Playa Esterillos is possibly Costa Rica’s best-treasured wealth. It is located south of Playa Hermosa on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The Rocky Punta Judas divides the two beaches. The extensive beach of Playa Esterillos with the turquoise blue water body spread out continually as far as the eyes can observe. It has chocolate colored beaches with palm trees and almond trees line the forest edge. The energetic 7 feet high waves of the fresh sea water wash off the shoreline every now and then. The seven kilometer beach is ideal for long walk or jogging. The waves are not so steep or fast, they are shallow. The total beach is very long and is divided into three Oesto, Centro and Este and all of them offer good quality waves for surfers with any level of expertise. The world famous spots are Esterillos Oeste and Esterillos Centro, the Oeste beach is fabulous for beginners and amateurs and Centro is superb for experienced surfers. The waves are a beach break with rights and lefts and usually between 50 and 150 meters in length. On a good day you could be expecting waves to last as long as 300 meters. Swell direction is south-west and the swell starts at under 3 feet but can go up to and over 12 feet. Surfing is best on mid tides.
It is a cool region, full of life with fewer crowds, with fresh air and sunny weather. This little paradise has a very pleasant weather throughout the year. The sunrise of the Playa Esterillos is truly a sheer inspiration, with vehemence of everlasting feelings amidst the supreme beauty of the nature. The waves along Esterillos Centro and Este are strong, and quite similar to those in Playa Hermosa. Esterillos Oeste has a beach break that is especially fun during a big swell. Swimmers should stay closer to the northern end of Esterillos Oeste, where a calm tidal pool offers shelter from the area’s dangerous riptides. All three villages have a handful of hotels, cafes and vacation rentals for travelers of all budgets.
Besides surfing, there are lots of activities such as Horseback riding, Sport fishing, ATVs, Kayaking and much more. At low tide, the area of Esterillos beach increases considerably, creating a blemish free vastness of dark sand waiting to be explored by beach combers.
